245 students showed up for the last FCA Huddle at Ediosn High School last week! The room was packed and the student leaders have done a great job reaching out to their campus! It was "FV Nerd Day" on campus in honor of the Bell Game the following night, so everyone was dressed up and having a great time! The leaders led a great game of "sit down if" and then student leaders Bri Emerzian got up and shared about her relationship with Jesus! She shared about how becoming a Christian does not always make things easier, but it provides a Rock and a Hope! Also, thanks to all the parents and youth pastors who came to support and serve at the huddle!

Huntington Beach FCA

About 65 students filled into room I-5 last week to hang out at HBHS FCA. We were blessed to have pizza and drinks provided by Hope Chapel, as well as the support of many other parents and youth pastors.The students led a fun Game and then Pastor Jim Gane from Crosspoint Baptist Church shared a message about the hope of Jesus. It was a great huddle!

Marina FCA last week was awesome, with about 65 students showing up to have fun and hear the word. After gorging themselves on pizza, the students watched as 4 of their peers competed in a game of "empty the tissue box" where the fastest person to pull all the sheets of paper of the box using only there elbows wins. Then the students had the opportunity to hear the word from Crosspoint Baptist Youth Pastor Nick Fisher. He shared about being strong in the Lord and the need of having a relationship with Him!

The 1st Sowers FCA of the year was a ton of fun, about 25 students showed up to hang out! We spent time playing some fun games and then heard a short message about God's Love. The students were challenged to invite their friends to come next time and find out about how much God loves them.

EHS FCA blew up on Thursday with well over 220 students in attendance. The student leaders at Edison continue to do a great job reaching out and extending invitations to FCA and creating a fun and welcoming environment! Leaders Madison Strobel and Melissa Balding led the "Oreo Cookie Game" and 1 student completed it in what had to be a world record. The game consist of placeing an oreo on your forehead and then getting it into your mouth without using your hands, definitely an FCA favorite!

After the game leader Lisa Ross got up and spoke to her peers about Jesus! She shared about how each one of us has fallen short of God's glory and made mistakes, and for that we become spiritually dead...but through Jesus we are given life! It is always a great thing when a student can get up and share his/her heart with their peers!

Over 75 students showed up to participate in the second huddle of the year for HBHS FCA. We had a great time hanging out, eating pizza , playing games and hearing the Word from Pastor Eric Oleson (God's House). Student Leader CJ led the students in a modified version of Rock-Paper-Scissor called Bear-Flick-Chuck Norris. Leader Susannah Oleson then introduced her Father Eric and he taught the students about the importance of having a relationship with Jesus and why we really need Him!

It was a fun day at FCA and the leaders are very excited about what God has in store for the year!

Marina FCA was awesome yesterday! About 75 kids showed and were blessed by the words of Pastor Eric Nelson from Calvary Chapel Westgrove. After the leaders lead a game of Charades, Pastor Eric, brought the word and stayed with the FCA theme "Why:" The Cross. He shared about the importance and meaning of the cross and how it affects who we are.

It was a great huddle and we were so blessed by the group of parents who showed up to provide pizza and snacks for the students! Thank you to all who are praying and supporting the huddle at Marina HS!

Edison High School FCA had it's 1st meeting of the year today and over 180 students showed up to make it awesome! Everyone was excited and the leaders did a great job getting the word out to theirs peers. We also had 8 youth pastors represented from 4 different churches! SO cool to see the body of Christ working together!

We had a great meeting, with pizza and fresh baked cookie for all the students! After getting setttled in the students were welcomed by a group of leaders who shared about their different youth groups and then we jumped into the "Who am I" game. Then after the game FCA president Riley Mailman shared about FCA...he shared this verse from Ephesians with them...

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,18 may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

He shared with the students that hopefully throughout the year the students will come to grasp the LOVE that Jesus had for them! Here are some pictures from today...

Huntington Beach High School FCA kicked off with a bang on Wednesday! About 85 students packed into Mr. Johnston's classroom to check out the 1st FCA meeting of the year! We had a great time playing the "Who am I" game and then talking about what FCA is and what we will be doing throughout the year. God is good and it is so cool to see a room jam-packed with kids who want to find out more about Jesus!

We will meet again in 2 weeks, but in the meantime here are some pictures from the day!

Marina FCA Kick Off

Yesterday at Marina high School 105 students packed into the Coach Marshall's portable RM. 241 for the first FCA meeting of the year! It was awesome to see all the students come together at the meeting! Pizza was provided by Calvary Chapel Westgrove and was a huge blessing to the hungry students. As is custom on the first meeting the leaders introduced themselves and then leader Ben Drolet lead the group in a fun game that got everyone talking and sharing funny facts about themselves. After the game our speaker got up and shared about "Why Jesus?" It was a great message and a great way to kick off the school year! God is good!

As a junior at the University of Southern California, Devon Kennard is familiar with the difficulties that come with being a collegiate student-athlete—both common (position changes and injuries) and unique (coaching changes and university-related NCAA sanctions). But for this starting defensive end, who is in full pursuit of Christ, the challenges have only deepened his faith and fueled his passion to lead his teammates and USC fans closer to the Lord.

STV: What has it meant to play football at tradition-rich USC? DK: It’s been an honor. Growing up—and even now—USC is the school for so many people. The brand we wear on our helmets is unlike any other. It’s my hope that those of us on the team who follow Christ present ourselves in the right way. His is the image we want to portray to people and to the community.

STV: How have the recent NCAA sanctions against USC affected you specifically? DK: I feel like God has definitely tested me in many ways. I’ve only been here for three years, and I’ve experienced things many athletes never have to face with coaching changes and NCAA sanctions, as well as position changes, injuries and surgeries. Through it all I have tried to give Him the glory because He’s led me through it. I truly believe He has plans to prosper me and not to harm me, as it says in Jeremiah 29:11.

STV: How do you bring the Lord into the game?

“...we need to realize that our time is now!”

DK: I don’t go to a game—home or away—without my Bible. I like to read Ephesians 6 about the armor of God, and I go into every game knowing that I am protected by Him.

God is the One who has given me the skills to be in this position, and I thank Him for that. It’s easy for athletes to build themselves up when things are going well. But, as Jesus said in Matthew 23:12, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” I want to remain humble because otherwise I know I will be humbled.

STV: How has FCA made an impact on your faith? DK: FCA creates an environment where Christian athletes feel safe. We do the same things, live the same lives and are dedicated to Christ. It is relieving to know there are other guys on the team who have the same goals and who are trying to walk in faith. You don’t feel like you’re fighting the battle alone.

At USC, we do our best to reach out to our teammates. Last season after every Thursday practice, a group of us prayed on the field, and, toward the end of the year, more and more guys started coming. We looked at it as a definite positive that they wanted to be a part of it.

A lot of people my age tend to put their faith aside. They try to live the college life and do the college thing, but we need to realize that our time is now! There’s no point in waiting. Having FCA on any campus is important because there are people who need it—Christian athletes who need that outlet or who are on the brink but don’t have anything connecting them to Him. FCA can really help fill that need.

WOW, what a week! Yesterday marked the final day of our OC FCA Football Power Camp. For 4 days 60 campers and 20+ coaches took over Lebard Football Stadium for a time of football and worship! We were blessed by great coaches throughout the week that included players such as; Josh Gage-UW, Kyle Negrete-USC, Matt Barkley-USC, Robbie Boyer-USC, Bryce Butler-USC, Mike Willis-APU, Chris Rix-Florida State, Jason Jacobi-Chapman, Jared Hall-Bethel, and many more...

The boys, ages 8-13, had a blast and grew both in the game of football and in faith! Mission Hills Church Youth Pastor, Danny Bowers was our Camp Chaplain throughout the week and did an awesome job of sharing about God's Power, God's Strength, and God's Victory. He really connected well with the campers! I was blessed by all the coaches and helpers who volunteered their time to come out and make this week a huge success! I am already looking forward to next year.

What an amazing week! The 682 campers that invaded UCLA for the week had a blast. Check out the video below. Miles McPherson delivered great messages all week, and the Katinas were awesome! The highlight by far though was this...132 athletes gave theirlives to Christ for the first time and 398 athletes rededicated theirlives to Him. That means 530 of the 682 athletes that stepped foot onUCLA’s campus last week made a new commitment to the Lord. PraiseGod! That my friends is what it is all about!

Camp Update - day 2

Today was another great day of preparation and prayer for FCA Camp 2011! The entire camp coaching staff and their families arrived today to complete the Staff piece to the camp puzzle.

As the coaches arrived this morning and got all checked in FCA staff were hard at work completing the preparations needed for the following day. My part of that was to drive the U-Haul down to Anaheim with Tony Gomez and pick up the wrestling mats (how I love LA traffic)! The huddle leaders completed their training and are now ready for the 692 campers that will arrive tomorrow morning to participate in camp! Good work Colin Sinclair, Jared Hall and Marina Mayer for training preparing and loving on these college students who have volunteered a week of their summer to make an impact for Eternity in the lives of all these campers!

In the afternoon the entire FCA Camp 2011 Staff convened for the Welcome Meeting, the first of many to come. After that the athletic staff got together to pray and prepare for the 7 practices, over 4 days, that will be taking places. Some notable Head Clinicians include Mike Sheppard (Football) - QB Coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Jose Campo (Wrestling) - Champion Wrestler and Renowned Coach who also had his book "Wisdom from the Corner" published recently! We are blessed beyond words with an incredible coaching staff!

The day finally concluded with an awesome commissioning ceremony, that brought to life the reality that all the hard work and preparation is now over and camp is really beginning! It's Game time...who's going to be a Game Changer?

Camp Update - day 1

Today was the first day of on site prep at camp. Core Staff and huddle leaders arrived to begin preparing and training for the arrivals of the campers on Wednesday morning. The day began for me and Jessica earl this morning as we awoke @ 5:30am to pack up our truck and get out of the apartment in time to pick up our camp U-Haul rental by 7:30am. After I got the U-Haul Jessica headed up to camp with the kids and i met a few of our other staff people at the warehouse to load up all the sports equipment, t-shirts, and about 3,000 pounds of bibles! WOW!

Once here we spent the day unloading and getting the equipment shed and training room set up.... on the other side of things the huddle leaders (college athlete/camp counselor) were having a bit more fun! They spent the day bonding, playing games and preparing their hearts spiritually for the week ahead of them! Then tonight the were treated to a Westwood favorite...Diddy Riese! Needless to say, today was tiring but rewarding! It is great to be a part of all the behind the scenes hard work that go in to making this an awesome experience for the Kids.

I will have Pictures everyday starting tomorrow...I promise!

Please Pray for; The huddle leaders as they prepare to influence the kids for Christ, The staff to be willing and ready to serve with a humble attitude!

The talented breakdancers put on a show for the 100+ students in attendance and everyone enjoyed it. After dancing Josh got a chance to share some of his story and about the love of Jesus and our need to really KNOW him! It was a great huddle!

Last Friday OC FCA hosted a collaborative FCA huddle for the 6th 7th and 8th grade students at Mariners Christian School! FCA staff along with 12 FCA student leaders from some local high schools had a blast passing out t-shirts, playing games and challenging each student to get involved with FCA when they enter high school! Grace and Alexa Boyer shared about being student leaders @ Mater Dei, and what each student could expect when they became leaders. Then Laney Barkley closed the day of with a story about how being an FCA leader on her campus is a great way to reach people that may have never known about Christ. She shared about how being an FCA leader has left a lasting impact on her campus!

Our hope as a staff is to encourage each of these students to make an impact for the Kingdom as they enter high school! Please continue to pray for the great work that MCS is doing raising up future leaders for Christ!

Author’s Note:What started as a lump in my throat eventually worked its way down into my stomach as I read the ESPN.com headline. Something to the effect of, “Wainwright injures pitching elbow.” “This can’t be good,” I thought.

Just a few weeks earlier, I had interviewed the Cardinals ace for our April cover story, and, as soon as I read the news, I knew we were going to have to make some adjustments to the magazine, which was already mid-production. But that internal knot wasn’t just the result of professional nerves; it was also the product of personal compassion.

The human side of me felt awful for Wainwright, who is a solid, sold-out man of God. The last thing I wanted was for him to get hurt. I wanted him to keep pitching well and thriving on the mound, using his gifts to bring glory to the Lord, which is something he loves to do.

After interviewing Wainwright over the phone while he and his family were driving to Florida for spring training, I’d written a story focusing on the lofty expectations he was shouldering this season and how his faith was helping him stay focused. Thus, when I learned that Wainwright would be having season-ending Tommy John surgery, I had to shake my head at the irony. All those expectations were going to go unmet—at least for now.

FCA Hoops Tournament Update

10 teams showed up for the inaugural OC FCA Basketball Tournament held at Edison High School. There were 4 teams in the high school division and 6 in the adult division, but the competition was fierce either way.

Everyone had a great time and got to play a ton of basketball. The winners of the day were the "Clippers" for the HS division and "Team 6" for the adult division. There were some great competitive and hard fought games all day long. Also, Dylan Garrity of "team 6" beat out Mikey Kinoshita of the "Kamakazis in the 3 pt shoot out. Both were very impressive, Mikey hit 12 of 15 shots but Dylan edged him out with a 13 of 15 shooting performance.

Today sowers FCA was the worst!!!!

April Fools! It was awesome! Youth pastors from CPC, Beach Cities and Seaside showed up to hang out and play games with the students who all had a blast. After eating pizza, provided each week by Barbara Osterkamp, the kids all played a fun game led by Justin Herman and then we played an FCA classic called trainwreck.

After the fun we got down to business, we talked about sacrifice and service and then put it to action! All 45 students at FCA wrote at least one letter to a member of the US armed forces serving oversees. It was a great opportunity to put our freedoms in perspective of another's sacrifice! We are going to mail the letters to our cousinChris Ford who is third in command on a US aircraft carrier stationed in Japan. Our prayer is that the troops under his command will beblessed in a small way by the letters we send!

Thank God for all those serving in the Armed Forces!!!

Today at Edison, about 150 students, 4 youth workers and 4 parents showed up at FCA. We were again blessed to have Whatta-A-Lotta Pizza and fresh baked cookies (both generously provided by Grandma & Grandpa Boyer). After a fun game lead by Josh Gane and Rayan Mustafa we had the priveledge of listening to Seabreeze Church's Youth Pastor Dave Strobel. He shared about what it truly means to be an imitator of Christ and not merely a copier. It was a great challenge to each person in the room!

On 2 out of the last 3 Thursdays Edison FCA student leaders joined together to go serve some of the students from the Special Abilities Cluster (SAC) program at Edison.

Every other Thursday one of the SAC teachers hosts a lunch for some of the SAC students, so they can work on their manners and social skills. So, the FCA leaders went and had lunch and interacted with the SAC students. It was a very rewarding time for both parties and our leaders were especially blessed by the experience. It is so cool to see the leaders serving the Edison community in a bigger way! God is Good!

How Come Talent is “God Given” When there is no God?

I don’t profess to be an expert on evolution or the defense of creation. I can’t explain the mutative process and how only some mutations are passed down and some are not. I can’t explain how natural selection, in combination with randomness and time, has produced human beings. At the end of the day, I really can’t explain why, “Evolution means that we’re all distant cousins: humans and oak trees, hummingbirds and whales.”

What I can tell you is that most of the world that has a platform to talk about it, at least in the media, seems to reject any possibility for a creator. Not hard to see that.

But what I find really interesting is that same “media” – the one that finds the idea of God as creator synonymous with garden gnomes as mischievous creatures that ruin my strawberries -- uses the phrase “God given talent” quite a bit. As I was watching the NCAA Tournament over the weekend, and the Oscars before that, and the Super Bowl before that my ears just continued to be pricked by commentators constantly referring to a standout actor, musician or athlete as having “God given talent.”

It’s the go to phrase when there just seems to be an astounding difference between say Lebron James and the next best athlete. Like when the Jamaican runner Usain Bolt smashed the world record in the 100 meter dash a few years back and there was no way to explain it really other than aparently God given talent. When an actor, say a really young one, just has an unparalleled ability to present that art or when a phenom artist or musician just pops up – God given talent.

Not once have I ever heard a media personality say, “What amazing evolutionary talent that player has” or “just look at the power of mutation, natural selection, and time at work.”

So how come when most of the enlightened part of the world thinks I have more in common with the UCLA or Florida mascots (bruins and gators) than a creative force do we still fall back on God as the final explanation for uncanny unexplainable human ability?

Maybe we just haven’t evolved beyond that silliness. Or maybe we just can’t get away from the fact that when we witness something truly amazing like a Jimmer Fredette jump shot – we intrinsically know that whatever is good and beautiful and astounding might not have trickled down from goo.

Last Friday we kicked-off our first ever huddle at Huntington Christian School. About 100 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in our huddle during their PE period. We played Ninja, clumps, and Blind-folded musical chairs, the kids all had a blast. I then had the opportunity to share my story of faith with them. It was a great event and we will be hosting an FCA huddle once a month at HCS.

Today 160 students showed up at Edison FCA to the smell of fresh baked cookies and pizza! After piling in the students got into groups and played a fun game that got everyone laughing. We were then blessed to have student leader Riley Mailman share his heart with us. He spoke about "Fired Up" Christians and what it truly means to be a real fired up Christian. It truly struck a chord with each person in the room! Thanks Riley and thank you to all the parents and youth pastors who showed up to support the huddle!

On Tuesday 50 students showed up to Marina FCA to eat pizza and cookies, play a fun game and hear from CPC youth pastor Justin Herman. After lining up and mowing down some pizza the students got into groups and played 2 truths and 1 lie, it was a fun way to get to know each other. Then Justin got up and encouraged the students to be bold in their faith and stand strong with the transforming power of Christ. He was a true encouragement to everyone in the room!

Florida State University sophomore Caroline Smith made an immediate splash with the Seminole swimming team when, as a freshman, she set the school record in the 500-yard freestyle. Even more impressive was the fact that she did so while turning in a stellar classroom performance, earning ACC Honor Roll honors and a 4.0 GPA. Still, as member of FSU’s FCA leadership team, Smith knows the records and honors are blessings from the Lord, whom she joyfully worships both in and out of the pool.

STV: Were you a natural-born swimmer, or did you ever doggie-paddle like the rest of us?CS: I took to the water naturally. I’ll never forget my mom begging me to get out of the bathtub as a little girl. I loved being around the water and spending my summers at the local pool and at swim camps.
I did have to work at the competitive side of it, though. In my very first race I finished dead last and was lapped along the way. But my mom says that after that race I was smiling like I’d won. I was just happy being able to swim. It didn’t matter what place I finished; I just loved the sport.
“You can’t sprint and expect to hold on; you have to be patient and endure.”
STV: You swim distance races at Florida State. What’s the key to success in those events?CS: It is all about endurance and patience. I’ll swim about 400 or more laps in practice to build my endurance. Practice also helps me with pacing and teaches me to be patient during competition. You can’t sprint and expect to hold on; you have to be patient and endure.

STV: In 2008, you qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Is it still a goal of yours to compete in the Olympics one day?CS: I think, at some point, every kid dreams of competing in the Olympics. If I made it to those starting blocks I would be very appreciative to God, realizing that it wouldn’t be just my efforts but His grace and the help of the people around me who got me there. But right now I’m taking one day at a time and focusing on the goals of an ACC Championship for our team and individual championships in my events.

STV: What do personal accolades mean to you in light of your relationship with the Lord?CS: I know they are blessings from Him, and they’ve had a huge impact on my faith. I believe the truth found in Philippians 4:13: “I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.” If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I prayed a lot about where I should go to school, and I know my prayers were answered. God led me to Florida State, and the people here have really blessed my college experience.

STV: Is FCA a part of that sentiment?CS: Definitely! Sometimes God drops down on the priority list, especially in the lives of athletes who have rigorous schedules and schoolwork. But FCA has helped me put Him first. It has encouraged me to grow stronger in my faith and reach out to others. The guidance we get through FCA helps mold us into who God made us to be.
The people I’ve met through FCA have been great, too—especially our leaders, Denise Bernath and Reggie Hutchins. It’s awesome to come together as athletes who have the same goals and ambitions of wanting to represent our teams well and serve God the best way we can.

Last Thursday about 150 students showed up for FCA in RM 317. We were blessed with tons of pizza (even though we ran out of plates), a fun game and a message by our very own student leader Annie Koeller. It was also the birthday of Christine Nakagaki, one of the special abilities students who attend the huddle, the students surprised her by singing happy birthday to her. Annie spoke on the importance of living a life purposed by God, and how without Him everything is fleeting under the sun, like trying to grasp wind (Ecclesiastes). After chowing down on some pizza and playing a fun game Garrett encouraged each one of us to live a life that is "pressing forward towards the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus."

WOW! Night of Champions 2011 was an amazing night of fun, food, and worship! Over 1,000 students from all over Orange County joined together to honor and give glory to Jesus!

Held at the amazing Mariners Church facilities, the students were treated to free In-N-Out burger, 2 live DJ's, professional break-dancers. Also available to the students to use was a volleyball court, 2 basketball courts, ping pong, and video games!

Once program started inside everyone went nuts! The band was rocking, a beat boxer was doing his thing, and the comedy group O' Manna was hilarious. We were treated to 3 testimonies from a professional boxer, Jody Foster a former professional surfer, and USC QB Matt Barkley. The students were then treated to a moving message about God's love for us by FCA Director of Ministries Barry Martinez! He then gave everyone the opportunity to accept the Lord or rededicate their lives, which over 150 students did! Praise God, for He is good!

The night ended with all of the nominees for the FCA Character & Influence Award coming on stage to be recognized as great leaders on there campuses. The finalists for the award were then brought forward and Clark Cashion from Corona Del Mar High School was the 2011 winner. Congrats to Clark and all the other students who were recognized for the impact they are making on their campuses.

The night was a huge success and would not have been possible with out all the support and help of our wonderful volunteers and parents! Thank You!

Congratulations to Packers fans! You all certainly have reason to celebrate this morning after the great victory in last night’s Super Bowl. Wear the cheeseheads all day and enjoy the moment!

As I watched the post-game coverage on SportsCenter this morning, I saw tons of highlights from the winning team, but there was one thing in the bottom ticker that caught my attention. It was a comment from Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who said, “I feel like I let the city of Pittsburgh down and the fans and my coaches and my teammates, and it’s not a good feeling.”

Man, I feel for Big Ben. That has to be a tough spot. But, honestly, I can’t think of an athlete or coach who hasn’t experienced this feeling.

Losing is part of sports, and we all go through it at some point or another. There are days when we don’t play well and we feel responsible for our team coming up short. And the same thing happens in life, too. We all make mistakes and the consequences of our actions affect others. When this happens, the burden we feel can seem absolutely oppressive.

When this feeling threatens to take us down a path of sorrow, guilt or dejection, we need to immediately turn to Christ. Yes, our actions may have had consequences, but they don’t have to ruin our lives. In fact, if we turn to the Lord in these moments and invite Him into the restoration process, we can actually experience great spiritual growth and healing.

By turning to Christ in our shortcomings, we find something we won’t get from the world: unconditional love. Even if everyone blames us for a negative outcome—and we agree with them—Christ loves us just the same as if we’d won the game or played perfectly, and He’s waiting to teach us more about this love by reaching us in our pain.

Today, whether you’re feeling like Ben Roethlisberger or like Aaron Rogers (the game’s MVP), know that, in God’s eyes—the ones that see you through the cross of Jesus Christ—you’re loved, valued, forgiven and victorious. Turn your pain and guilt over to Him and let Him remind you of His great love and faithfulness, regardless of the score.

We played a fun modified version of team tag and then had 5 students volunteer to take part in blindfolded musical chairs. The students all had a blast and then we were all blessed to have Edison FCA President Carlie Boyer come share her testimony with the students! She did a great job and really connected with the junior highers! After munching on some pizza, 5 students volunteered for what they though was a normal game of musical chairs, it had a twist though, they had to do it blindfolded. It was a hilarious version of the game that had the whole room laughing. After the game Pastor David Nehrig from Seaside church shared with the group about the power of one person who stands firm for God and the following that can create! HS student Scot Orel shared how he has seen that happen in his own life. Thanks to those two for sharing their hearts with us. About 200 students showed up to eat pizza, play 4 corners, and hear an awesome testimony from Fresno State Football's Team Chaplain Jamal Jones. Jamal encouraged the students to live a life with the desire to be obedient to our Creator. He shared about his childhood in the East-side of Oakland and how through God's Grace he was able to withstand all the temptation that surrounded him and not stray from his relationship with Jesus! He also encouraged the students to live a life of sexual purity,a nd the importance of God's plan for purity. Jamal then closed with a magnificent recital of FCA's Competitors Creed.

Yesterday about 175 students showed up to munch on some Del taco burritos and tacos, play a game and listen to our very own Nolan Graefensteiner share his testimony. We played a Christmas song game, were 18 boxes on a sheet of paper were filled with pictures that corresponded to various Christmas songs. It was fun and the students really got into it!

We then listened up as Nolan bravely shared some of the darkness from his past and how God used a true friend to help pull him out of it and in to the accepting light of Jesus Christ. It was powerful and we are sad to see Nolan leave Mission for Dana Hills but we pray he will make an impact on that campus like he did here at Mission!

Marina FCA was awesome this week! About 60 students were again blessed to have del taco for lunch, courtesy of our wonderful parent support team! High School Pastor Eric Nelson from Calvary Chapel Westgrove was our guest speaker and he really brought it! He shared with the kids about struggles he had growing up and how the Lord changed his life. He shared how he learned that we need to stay connected to Christ and His plan for our life will unfold. Last Friday was our 4th huddle @ Sowers Middle School, and our last before Christmas break. About 30 students showed up for some fun Christmas themed games and to hear the word. We played a Christmas song guessing game and then had the students get into groups and decorate one person as a snowman (with toilet paper)! It was great fun and all the kids enjoyed themselves, it always fun when TP is involved!

In August, Sports Illustrated tabbed 16 athletes as their “Stars of Tomorrow.” One of those talented, young competitors was 17-year-old Rocco Grimaldi, who has accumulated a long list of athletic achievements even though he’s still in high school. This month, we discovered that there’s more to this young hockey phenom than great puck-handling skills. One thing? His desire to bring Christ to the world of hockey one teammate at a time.

STV: What was it like being in Sports Illustrated as just a 17-year-old?RG: Obviously that opportunity was from God, and I feel really blessed. I know a lot of people—especially kids my age—don’t get that chance. So, it was a real honor that they chose me out of all the kids who play hockey.

STV: Do you feel any pressure playing for the USA Hockey development team and being dubbed a future hockey star?RG: It’s a great feeling having the USA on my chest and representing the nation. But while it’s a great honor to represent our country, I don’t feel pressured by it. God has blessed me with it, and if I keep glorifying Him, He will continue to bless me. He’s already blessed us all with His Son’s blood, and His grace has already been given to us; it’s just a matter of us accepting it. I think things like SI are different blessings, and I appreciate

those things but in a smaller way when compared to Christ.

STV: When did you begin your relationship with Christ?RG: When I was 4, my mom asked me if I wanted to accept Christ, and she told me, in words I could understand, what that meant. I asked Him into my life right then, and I’ve been growing in my faith ever since. My grandma was a really big factor in that as well, always teaching me little things and giving me verses to read and study.

These past two years have been the biggest years of my life regarding my faith. We are plugged into a good church, and I have friends who build me up, and I build them up. A couple of summers ago, a Bible teacher challenged me to read the entire Bible in 90 days. I did, and it has done wonders for me because God showed me many amazing things.

All of those things—having a church life, continuing to read and study the Bible, and having people in my life like my parents, my grandma and my sister—have really helped build my faith.

STV: Have you been able to share your faith with your teammates?RG: Absolutely. With all of the hockey camps I go to for the U.S., I’ve had the chance to minister to every roommate I’ve had. Several of them have even accepted Christ. I also had a roommate at the Under-18 World Championships who asked Christ into his heart the day before the gold-medal game. That was cool. Kids are always asking me why I don’t swear and why I don’t do certain other things, and it’s good when they start asking questions like that. I try to live it out and, as it says in the Bible, do all things for God. I try to use my hockey ability and play for Him.

STV: How have you been involved with FCA?RG: I’m in FCA at school and have made some really good friends. It’s a great thing, especially in public schools where you don’t hear about God in the classroom. It’s cool to then go to a class and know you are around fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Edison huddle went off today with about 150 students showing up to play some games and listen to our speaker, Dylan. The students got to play pass the hula-hoop down the line, where the students grab hands and have to get the hula-hoop from one end of the line to the other. We were then treated to a great talk on following God's path for our lives and walking the straight and narrow by Dylan, an Edison Alum & leader at The Rock Bible study (@ Beachcities). We had 3 volunteers bake cookies for the students who were loving it!

Thank You to all the volunteers and youth pastors who came out to support Edison FCA today! We couldn't do it without you!!!

HBHS FCA had our first meeting since Thanksgiving and the leaders surprised everyone with some homemade dessert treats! After getting everyone up and going with the "Human Knot" game the students were blessed to have FCA Regional Director of Ministries Barry Martinez come share with them! Barry told them stories about his HS freshman football, and the disappointments he faced and how it relates to life and living for Christ! It is safe to say we all really enjoyed welcoming Barry to HBHS!

A big Thank You goes out to all the leaders for preparing Dessert for us and for the parents who continue to donate money for pizza! You are all awesome!

Peyton Carter's Story

By now many of you may have heard about Peyton, the freshman at Newport Harbor HS and the car accident he was in in Huntington Beach. If you have not yet heard his story, hear it is...

Peyton was in a car crash on Friday November 5, 2010. He was a passenger in a car driving home from a friends house that night. The driver swerved and lost control of his car hitting a brick wall on Peyton's side of the car. There were no drugs or alcohol involved and it was truly an accident. He immediately went unconscious on impact and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Peyton was placed in an induced coma, and the doctors from UCI Medical Center and CHOC worked diligently to safe his life.

The days following the accident were extremely difficult for those closest to Peyton. As Peyton fought for his life, those closest to him were left to pray and rely on the peace only our Heavenly Father can give. Here are some updates directly from the family...

Nov 10, 2010 - "Peyton continues to fight for his life. On Monday the 8th, his doctors performed surgery on him to relieve some of the pressure on his brain."

Nov 12, 2010 - "Please pray for success and stability as his body begins to experience consciousness."

Nov 13, 2010 - "Praise God !Your prayers are being heard and Peyton is doing well!"

Nov 16, 2010 - "His eyelids are moving and his eyes are twitching more each day. His team (you and me included) are encouraged ."

Nov 18, 2010 - "God is showing up and answering prayers. Peyton is breathing on his own!He has even been playing ball from his bed!"

Nov 24, 2010 - "His newest accomplishment is the ability to reach down, bring his foot near and put a sock on and off his foot"

Nov 28, 2010 - "He has taken a couple of walks with a walker! He can put on his own tee shirt! He has eaten bits of food - dining on cream of wheat this morning."

Dec 1, 2010 - "He is doing so well so rapidly that they are going to discharge him tomorrow to go home! The hope is that he will continue to heal even faster at home with his comfortable and familiar setting not to mention regular daily life with little sister and dog."

That is just a quick glimpse into the past month in the life of Peyton Carter. Peyton has made a most miraculous recovery and all the thanks and glory belongs to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is by his grace and power that Peyton has made and exceeded all expectations for his recovery. As Peyton still has a long road of therapy and recovery ahead of him please keep him and his family in your Prayers!

Edison High School FCA played host to 175 students today! Feeding them pizza, and homemade brownies and cookies! The student leaders led an interactive version of "Hot Potato" that helped the students get to know each other better. Then after the game one of our leaders Rayan Mustafa shared his testimony with everyone. He shared about the emptiness in his heart before he found the Lord, and how he had tried to fill it other things like popularity. He encouraged everyone to find their hope in the Lord and not the things of this earth. Good work Rayan!

The FCA huddle @ Mission Viejo went off today! About 200 students filled the room and came to enjoy round table pizza, a game and an awesome testimony. Matt and Jordan, two of our awesome leaders, led a game where the contestants had to find items in the crowd of students. Then we were treated to an inspiring testimony of Christs love, from former Washington Husky Linebacker Josh Gage.

Today was another awesome huddle @ Marina High School FCA. I got to share my testimony in front of about 50 students, parents and teachers! It is so exciting to be working alongside these students as they impact there campus for Christ!

But... on a more somber note, we said goodbye to Megan Carr, the FCA area rep for the past 2 years. . Megan will be missed, but the students had a chance to bid her farewell and pray for her today at the meeting! Thanks for your service Megan!!!

This season hasn’t exactly turned out the way Iowa State volleyball player Rachel Hockaday planned. As a junior outside hitter, Hockaday was set to be a key component in the Cyclones’ success but suffered a season-ending knee injury just 12 points into the first match of the year. As STV’s November “Heart of an Athlete,” Hockaday had fielded our interview before the season, but, after the circumstances changed, she was kind enough to give us a few more minutes on the phone and tell us how the Lord has worked through this new challenge.

STV: When we last spoke, the season was about to begin and you had high expectations. What went through your mind when you got hurt?RH: The first thing was disappointment that my season was over. I had jumped for a hit—something I had done a million times—but I landed weird on my left foot, and I knew something was wrong right away.
STV: Given your faith in the Lord, how has your perspective on the injury changed over time?RH: Watching instead of playing has definitely given me a different perspective. I used to apply Ephesians 6:10 (“…be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power,” NIV) to my performance during games. Now I have a new role on the team: to be a leader and stay strong by cheering the team on from the bench.

STV: How does your faith affect your relationship with your teammates?RH: Many of my teammates are strong in their faith already but want to know more. We recently watched The Case for Christ video by Lee Strobel, which was great, and we just started reading the book of Ruth, which has generated a lot of questions. And hopefully through the positive light in our lives, others will see it and want to be a part of it, too.
STV: How has being involved with FCA helped you share your faith?RH: After going to FCA my freshman year, I started growing closer with the people and getting to know Kevin Lykins, our FCA leader. Later in the year, he invited me to the leadership group meetings. I was nervous at first because I didn’t know if I could actually stand up in front of people and share my faith. But Kevin and the other leaders have helped me along the way. I’m comfortable sharing as a leader now and am encouraged that most of my teammates come to the FCA meetings and to our team Bible studies at the Lykins’ house.
This summer I also served as a coach at a weeklong FCA Power Camp in Ames (Iowa). The girls ranged in age from third grade to junior high. It was awesome helping them play their sports and teaching them about the Lord.
STV: How have you changed spiritually since coming to Iowa State?RH: I’ve definitely grown and matured, and God has put so many great people in my life here and given me so many great opportunities. I grew up in a Christian home, and I’ve always been around church, but it wasn’t until I got to college my freshman year that I really started growing in my faith, especially through FCA.
Now, God is the center of my life—in sports and school. As athletes, we can get caught up in the importance of winning, but, in the end, all that matters is our relationship with Christ.

Tyrod Taylor, QB, Virginia Tech Hokies

Every legitimate college football team has one. A field general who knows no fear. A signal-caller with ice in his veins. Simply stated, a quarterback who can both lead the team to victory and pick them up in defeat.

Virginia Tech Quarterbacks Coach Mike O’Cain knows a great quarterback when he sees one. He has offered his instruction to plenty of them in his time, always reminding them of the reality of their position.

“I tell them they’ll receive a lot of praise that is undeserved and a lot of the blame and criticism that is undeserved as well,” he said.

In light of the circumstances, O’Cain and the Hokies know they are blessed with Tyrod Taylor, the senior quarterback who has filled the position for the past four years.

“Tyrod is a natural leader because he is strong and demands respect, but not in a forceful way,” O’Cain said. “He has that Godgiven ability to lead and is just a good guy to be around. The game is very important to him, but doing things the right way is even more important to him. He’s put his life and his talents in God’s hands.”

O’Cain’s final sentence paints a clear picture of Taylor. The quarterback’s stats have put him at the top of nearly every Virginia Tech record category and have earned him offensive MVP awards and ACC Championships. But Taylor doesn’t want to be defined as “just” a quarterback. Unlike many of his position counterparts across the country Taylor seeks to remain humble and unassuming—a man who isn’t awash in all he can do, but in what he can’t do on his own.

“Without God I can’t do anything,” Taylor said. “I have put my faith in Him, and through Him I believe I can achieve anything.”

About 150 students (50% dressed as Fountain Valley nerds) flooded into RM. 317 today for Edison FCA. On a day when the school is preparing for the Battle of the Bell, the showdown between Edison and Fountain Valley's football teams, all these student cruised over to FCA for some fun, games, pizza and the Word! Student Leader Riley Mailman brought it today and shared the Truth and Reality of a life focused on serving Jesus! Nice work Riley!

Pizza, about 15 boxes worth, was generously donated by Huddle Coach Suzie Matthieson! Freshly baked cookies were brought by Helen Boyer & Char Goodman. Thank You!!! And a big thanks to the Ladies who came to serve the students, We couldn't do it without you!

Yesterday marked the Kick Off of FCA @ Mission Viejo HS and what a great time it was! About 175 students showed up to hang out, eat pizza, play games and fellowship. The students were treated to a skit performed by a group of student leaders, and were showered with leftover Halloween candy during and after the game! A special thanks goes out to the Moms who volunteered to come out and serve all the kids during lunch! Thank You Ladies!

As the second-year head football coach at Clemson University, Dabo Swinney is hoping to lead the Tigers to their first ACC Championship in 19 years. After accepting Christ through FCA in high school, the Alabama native (with one of the most memorable names in college football) is focused not only on making a positive impact on the school’s record books, but also on the lives of his players and staff.

STV: You’ve probably been asked this hundreds of times, but how did you get the name Dabo?DS: When I was born, my older brother would only refer to me as, “that boy.” Coming out of his mouth as a 17-month-old it sounded like, “da-bo.” I guess my parents just thought Dabo sounded good. By the time I was in first grade, that was what everyone knew me as, and there was no turning back. I didn’t even know my name was William until my fourth grade teacher took roll and said, “William Christopher Swinney.” I thought, “Who is that?”

STV: What was your first experience with FCA?
DS: A youth football coach named Stewart Wiley, who I met when I was 13 and who is still a dear friend, started the first FCA Huddle at my high school in Pelham, Ala. I started going because the pretty girls were there, but the next thing I knew, I was learning about the Bible and about having a relationship with Christ.

STV: I hear you accepted Christ through FCA. Can you tell us how that happened?
DS: One of my childhood heroes, Joey Jones, a great receiver at Alabama, spoke at one of our meetings. I was fired up to hear him and thought he would talk about football, but, instead, he talked about what God had done in his life. He offered us the opportunity to be saved, and the next thing I knew I was praying with Joey Jones and accepting Christ as my Lord and Savior. I went home that night and wrote in my Bible, “February 3, 1986 – I dedicated my life to the Lord today, and He will be with me forever.”

STV: How has that decision affected your life?
DS: Every five or six years, I sign my name in my Bible and update where I am in life. I’ve had lots of ups and downs and struggles just like everybody else, but, because of that decision, I’ve had the true peace, happiness and hope that can only come from having a solid spiritual foundation in knowing Jesus Christ as my Savior.

STV: As a Christian, what is your opinion on the power of a coach’s influence?
DS: It is an incredible responsibility, and I don’t take it lightly. I understand that my job is to coach football, but I also feel that it is my responsibility to make sure the players have the opportunity to grow in every area of their lives. I try to make sure we have all the resources here for these guys to grow athletically, academically, spiritually and socially.
I hope I can be the head coach here for a long time, but, more than anything, I hope I can make a difference in the lives of young people by how I live my life. Billy Graham once said that a coach has the opportunity to influence more lives in one year than most others do in a lifetime. Having the word “coach” beside your name is an awesome responsibility.
